The spectacular Sherborne Castle in Dorset has been the Wingfield Digby family home since 1617. This historic house was built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 and reflects a glorious variety of decorative styles from over 400 years of English History. The castle is nestled amongst 42 acres of beautiful Capability Brown designed gardens, grounds and a 50 acre lake.
“We host 25-30 weddings a year and for everybody’s wedding the site has got to be absolutely pristine,” explained Tim Stiles, Head Gardener at Sherborne Castle Estates. The team at Sherborne Castle took delivery of a Major MJ70-410 roller mower earlier this year. It is used for all the largest areas of grass cutting and it has proved to be the perfect combination with their Deutz Fahr 320 F.
“We cut the grass twice a week in the spring and summer and then weekly throughout the rest of the year. So the stripes are kept looking nice and sharp for all the events that we have,” said Tim. The versatility of this mower has really impressed Tim and his team. “It’s very flexible because it can go from short grass into long grass which is cut on a 6 times a year cycle,” explained Tim. “It just chomps it all down beautifully. It is shaft driven so there’s no whining or slipping of the belts. It’s so versatile because you can take it straight back and cut 2″ short lawns again.”
Tim and his team demoed all the top brands of mowers with the Major emerging as the clear winner. “This is definitely the best mower we’ve had here, for handling and finished cut. I’d recommend this mower to anyone who’s got a large area of grass, maybe 10 acres or more,” concluded Tim.
