At Major Equipment, we aim to support farmers in maximising their farm’s potential with our grant-approved products and solutions.
The Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) provides grant aid to farmers in the Republic of Ireland to build and/or improve a specified range of farm buildings and equipment on their holding. Toppers for grassland management and mulchers for crops, grassland, weeds and scrub are eligible for grants (up to 60%) under TAMS within the following schemes:
- Organic Capital Investment Scheme (OCIS)
- Animal Welfare, Nutrient Storage Scheme (AWNSS)
- Young Farmer Capital Investment Scheme (YFCIS)
- Women Farmer Capital Investment Scheme (WFCIS)

Calculating grant aid
All qualifying farmers are eligible for grant aid. Grant amounts are calculated by multiplying the working width of the machine with the reference cost and allocating the correct percentage depending on the scheme. The following chart lists the reference cost of each machine.
Machine | Reference cost (per linear metre)* |
---|---|
Major Cyclone | €2,893.85 |
Centre Mounted Mulcher | €2,893.85 |
MJ39 Hedge Cutter | €2,893.85 |
Toppers (trailed) | €2,527.65 |
Toppers (mounted) | €1,479.78 |
How much support will I get?
We present a few scenarios to provide an idea of the available supports. These scenarios are only for illustrative purposes: applicants need to satisfy all terms and conditions related to the specific scheme when applying for the grant.
Scenario 1: Martin, 55 years old
Martin has a suckler farm in County Galway. He is interested in the 2.5m Major Cyclone for pasture maintenance and scrubland control on some 30-hectares. Under the Animal Welfare and Nutrient Storage Scheme (AWNSS), he would qualify for 40% of aid towards the cost of the Major Cyclone.
Grant calculation
2.5 x €2,893.85 = €7,234.62
€7,234.62 x 40% = €2,893.85
Scenario 2: Jim, 46 years old
Jim runs an organic farm in South Tipperary. He is choosing between the 9ft Trailed Topper (2.7m) and the 2.8m Major Cyclone for his farm. As a certified Irish Organic Association member, Jim qualifies for 60% grant aid towards the cost of either machine under the Organic Capital Investment Scheme (OCIS).
Grant calculation
- 9ft Trailed Topper = 2.7 x €2,893.85 = €7,813.39
€7,813.39 x 60% = €4,688.04
- 2.8m Cyclone = 2.8m x €2,893.85 = €8,102.78
€8,102.78 x 60% = €4,861.67
Scenario 3: Shane, 30 years old
Shane has a mixed stock farm. He is looking to invest in mulcher that can also take on verges and hedges should he expand into agricultural contracting. Under the Young Farmer Capital Investment Scheme (YFCIS), Shane qualifies for 60% towards the purchase cost of MJ39 Hedge Cutter.
Grant calculation
1.43 x €2,893.85 = €4,138.21
€4,138.21x 60% = €2,482.92
